The Dragons Under 18’s, Minor Premiers, as the League Winners are known, travelled to The Stoop on a fine day to play in the WCAM London RL Junior League Grand Final against their fiercest and closest rivals, Greenwich Admirals. The Dragons team was a little under prepared and were soon on the back foot against the much bigger Greenwich players. It was going to be a tough day at in West London.
The first 20 minutes of the game saw The Dragons defending well and holding out the attacks but Greenwich’s pressure told and the Dragons quickly found themselves 12 - 0 down as half time approached. Worse was to come immediately after the break when the lads went further behind at 18 – 0. At no point did heads drop and the Dragons stuck to the gameplan, playing out their sets and gaining field position. Ryan Ellis darted over from acting half back and his effort was converted by Callum Bowie to get the Dragons scores moving.
Five minutes later, Ellis was over again from short range and Bowie tacked on the extras. 12-18, game on. Greenwich upped their game, realising that they were in a real match. The irrepressible Doug Ebanks broke from 40 metres out and scored under the posts giving Bowie an easy conversion to tie the scores. The dream was on and Greenwich looked finished as the Dragons superior fitness was telling.
Both teams struggled for field position and Greenwich tried for a field goal. The Dragon won possession, were awarded a penalty and set up for a final push. In a cruel blow, the ball was lost and Greenwich burst through the middle of the Dragons defensive line to score and seal the victory. The Dragons had put in a brave and skilled performance of which the team and the whole club can be proud.
Dragons Head Coach Martin Coyd said ‘To have two teams in the London RL Grand Finals is a first and also big step forward for us this year. We had three of our teams crowned League Champions at 12’s, 13’s and 18’s and two beaten finalists. All the players and the volunteers have worked so hard to get here and have had a reward for their efforts. We will build through the winter and be even stronger in 2011.’
