Champions!

Medway Dragons’ U11 Squad returned from the Mighty Quins’ Festival at the Twickenham Stoop on Saturday as Champions, returning the trophy to the Garrison Ground after its loss in 2009. With a strong squad the Dragons were able to field two teams – Gold and Red.

The Gold team were in a tough pool with Brentwood Elvers and last year’s winners Richmond Warriors. In the first game against the Elvers the Golds battled hard but the old Achilles heel of weak tackling came back to haunt the team. Despite tries from Dan Rooke and James Hudson the Golds went down 16-8. However in their next game the Golds finally showed their supporters and coaches what they were capable of, stunning the Warriors with a 28-12 scoreline. Defence was still an issue, but the Warriors were simply unable to deal with the Gold forwards and this built a solid platform, enabling the backs to run riot. Danny Moore scored a hat-trick, Dan Rooke twice, with Jack Bloomfield and Reuben Murdoch-North adding the other tries. In their next pool game the Golds played the Elvers again, this time with added resolve. Tough tackling from Ewan Kersey and Aaron Mathe kept the Elvers at bay for much of the game but the battling Golds just could not get their own try. In the dying moments the Elvers scored the one try of the game, once again exploiting the Golds in-experience in defence. For their final pool game the Golds were due to have a re-match with the Warriors, but the latter conceded the game and the Gold team were runners up in their Pool. Rhea Callagham, Amun Bains, Regan Blythe, Owen Baldwin and William Milham had all played important supporting roles in the pool matches.

The Red team, consisting of the more experienced players in the squad, topped their own pool. They won all three pool games against New Malden Magpies (24-0), West Croydon Broncos (8-0) and Brixton Bulls (4-0), without conceding a try through out by playing tough un-compromising rugby that set a marker for the rest of the Festival.

So by the cruellest of fates the Play-Off Semi Final pitted Medway Dragon against Medway Dragon. Despite the best efforts of the Gold team there was only ever going to be one winner. The Reds were determined to get to the final and put their less experienced colleagues to the sword in a comprehensive victory. The final score was 20-0, however once the final whistle blew all were friends again as everyone knew how far the Gold team players had come.

So to the final against Brixton Bulls, who had knocked out the Elvers in their own Semi-Final. Much was made of the Bulls attack but in reality if was completely blunted by ferocious defence from the Red team, who then attacked at every opportunity with assurance and flair. Despite a momentary lapse of concentration, conceding a try when they were already 24-0 ahead, the Red team played their best rugby league of the season to absolutely smash their South London rivals and win the final and the competition. Final score 28-4. Alex Russell, Billy Young, Sam Crean, Atu Laqeretabua, Harry Bloomfield, Ollie Bell, Lewis Hollidge, Ed Holland (Captain), William Vodo, Adam Clark, Josh Bruin and Harry Meadows all played their part in a true team performance.

The final word came from Medway Dragons' Director of Rugby, at the Stoop to watch the finals: “I am very proud of the performances, outstanding Rugby League, skill, pace, courage, determination and team work which delivered the most emphatic victory.”
